To Catch a Thief (1955)
Won the Academy Award for color cinematography. Nominated for color costume design and art direction/set decoration.
After the brilliant and significant Rear Window, Hitchcock takes a break. He actually referred to this film as a “holiday”. It is a light hearted comedic thriller set in the beautiful French Riviera.
The story follows a man who in his past operated as a jewel thief. Someone in the area starts to mimic his burglary techniques and he is blamed for the crimes. So he sets out to find the real thief himself and prove his own innocence.
Hitchcock again managed to rummage up some controversy by pushing the limits set by the times regarding sexual situations and dialog. There are some really nice scenes, and a lot of the elements that Hitchcock had become famous with, but most fans don’t really take the film for much more than what it was intended to be.
(Directed by Alfred Hitchcock)
