The Butcher Boy (1997)
The blackest of comedies. Almost sickly black. But take under consideration that it's hard to lighten up a story where a little kid chops his friends and family up with a large knife. The little boy is Francie, a boy who loves his family so much that when people start to spread nasty little rumors about them, he takes into them with an eight-inch meat cleaver. That's pretty funny. Jordan read the novel of which the film is based while filming Interview with the Vampire and knew immediately he wanted to make it into a future project. He said that his major concern while making the film was to keep true to the book’s tone; deeply dark yet laced with subtle comedy. All in all, the film accomplishes that in which it sets out to do. Beware: this film is not for everyone. (Written and directed by Neil Jordan)
