The 39 Steps (1935)

Considered by many to be Hitchcock’s first masterpiece, it seems that with this project Hitchcock finally found his inner groove.  The film is beautifully structured, laced with witty comedy, and features all of the spy and espionage themes that he later became famous for.  It’s the story of a man who, while out enjoying a night at the theater, is confronted by a strange lady that asks to come home with him.

He obliges and she ends up being murdered in his apartment by spies who have hunted her down.  He is accused of the crime and from there has to travel abroad to solve the mystery and save his life (North by Northwest anyone?). Anyway, on the way he is handcuffed to a beautiful blonde, and while the relationship is ugly at first, it soon blossoms into beautiful, sweet love.

Wonderful movie: am I right, sir?
