Secret Agent (1936)

We were really pleasantly surprised about how deep and multi-layered this film is. We literally had to watch it twice to catch everything.  Set in the mix of World War I, it’s the story of a man who’s death is faked by his own government.

While inquiring about what is going on, he learns that he is to be sent on an espionage mission to kill a German spy.  He meets up with his new partner and his new assigned wife and together they search for, find, and hunt the undercover enemy. There’s really no need to go much beyond that because the story unravels beautifully and we wouldn’t want to ruin it for you.

But we will say that we truly appreciate Hitchcock’s use of story telling tools. The ways the characters changed throughout the film really gave you a chance to connect and relate with them.  Another more specific, subtle trick he used was a number of loud and continuous background sounds to fog up the spy’s communication with each other; symbolic of what was happening in the story.  The film is filled with such subtle tricks.

Anyway, we really like this movie and I hope you do too.
