Rain Man (1988)
Rainman won the Academy Award for screenplay written directly for the screen, director, actor, and picture. Nominated for art direction/set decoration, cinematography, editing, original score.
Very powerful film about a greedy and manipulative man who suddenly discovers that he has an autistic brother that has been stuffed away in a mental institution for his whole life. He kidnaps his brother from the institution; they go on a cross-country adventure that leads to a healthy dose of self-discovery. Dustin Hoffman has never been better.
He put a huge amount of work into the role that was originally written as an upbeat and spastic idiot savant. Dustin Hoffman suggested the more mellow approach and movie magic was made. (Directed by Barry Levinson)
