Midnight Express (1978)

Won the Academy Award for score and screenplay based from previous material. Nominated for editing, director, supporting actor, and picture. In 1970 Billy Hayes tried to smuggle four pounds of hashish out of Turkey by strapping on his chest. The airport police stopped and searched him and sent him directly to jail. He was sentenced to four years and two months of prison, but with only fifty-three days left on his sentence the Turkish government bumped up the charges and the penalty went to thirty more years. So he escaped to Greece who shipped him back to America. Three years later this film was released. It's based on Hayes's novel regarding his experiences, though major dramatic liberties were taken. All in all, very good film. (Written by Oliver Stone)
