Jamaica Inn (1939)

In the last of his contracted English films, Hitchcock chose a project outside of the modern times.  He was stereotypically a contemporary filmmaker and only two other times in his long career did he work in the distant past:  Under Capricorn and Waltzes from Vienna.

This film is set in the early 19th century and is the story of a band of pirates living in an inn by the sea.  To make a living they sabotage coastline light sources and loot the ships that wreck on the rocky shoreline.  The story moves along nicely and the acting is strong. It’s not your typical Hitchcock picture, but enjoyable none the less.

Despite the alleged lack of Hitchcock’s enthusiasm during the film’s production, it did fairly well in the box office and added fuel to the fire that was Hitchcock’s public appeal.  He was now primed and ready for his jump to Hollywood.

(Directed by Hitchcock)
