Gallipoli (1981)
Taking a turn from the horror genre, Weir comes up with the story for a war film. It's about an athlete on his way to the Olympics. When his homeland, Australia, enters World War I, he drops his running career, does for country, and joins the war effort. This early Mel Gibson piece is considered to be some of Weir's best work.
The film is named after a famous World War I battle that took place on the shores of Turkey. The purpose of the attack was to divert attention from a larger invasion coming from the north. All in all, the film is very historically accurate. (Written and directed by Peter Weir)
