Flawless (1999)
This is the first project that Schumacher has both written and directed in almost fifteen years. Overcoming prejudices is the theme of this film. After suffering from a stroke that paralyzes his vocal cords, a man is prescribed vocal lessons from a transsexual neighbor. At first the two don't think much of each other, but eventually their walls break down. Both leads are done beautifully by Robert De Niro and Philip Seymore Hoffman. Neither actor was paid in advance for their work, which is a testament to its quality. (Written and directed by Joel Schumacher)
