Flatliners (1990)
Nominated for the Academy Award for sound effects. One of the finest thriller genre movies ever made (personal opinion of course). And dark? Oh god yes. The demons these characters have to endure are bone chilling. The movie is about a brash young group of medical students out to make an early claim to fame by intentionally killing each other and then using advanced lifesaving equipment to bring each other back to life. The effort is to find out what’s on the other side and be able to write about it. But what's on the other side follows them back and they are suddenly haunted by the stains in their pasts. Very smart and very grim. (Directed by Joel Schumacher)
