Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee, and Deep Roy. Cinematography by Philippe Rousselot. Edited by Chris Lebenzon. Produced by Brad Grey and Richard D. Zanuck. Written by John August. Directed by Tim Burton.
The project was in development for some time before Burton got involved.
Many different spins were put on the story in the extended preproduction. Burton wanted to take the story back to the basics, and stay as true as possible to the book.
Burton, being an accomplished artist, was able to draw his vision to help his crew produce it.
Important to both Burton and Depp to be as true as possible to the book.
Biggest change from the book is the additional story at the end.
Used a lot of CG, but tried to build his sets as elaborately as possible.
