Brazil (1985)
Nominated for the Academy Award for art direction/set decoration and screenplay written directly for the screen. The first of many real kick ass Gilliam films. Set in the future, this movie is about a controlled society and it's population's dreams of freedom (more or less). The disturbing ending was originally changed by the producers to a more happy one, but when Gilliam threatened to pull his name; they slapped the old one back in. If for no other reason, view for the incredibly beautiful sets. View for the cinematography. View for your mom. Gilliam has said that his most profound memory of making this film is that he was sure that it would never be completed. The shoot took over nine months despite its twenty-week schedule, and still squeaked by under a million dollars. One of the greatest filmmaking mysteries. (Screenplay written and directed by Terry Gilliam)
