Apollo 13 (1995)
Won the Academy Award for editing and sound. Nominated for art direction/set decoration, visual effects, original score, screenplay based from previous material, supporting actor, supporting actress, and picture.
Good movie about the failed Apollo 13 moon mission. Before they took off, it was just another boring space mission. After avoiding tragedy and returning home, they came back heroes.
The space weightlessness seen in the film is not a special effect. Howard used NASA's KC-135 airplane, a shuttle that bullets through the earth's atmosphere. The problem with this technique is that the airplane can only produce twenty-three seconds of weightlessness per flight. Five hundred parabolic flights were taken over thirteen days to achieve all of the space footage. (Directed by Ron Howard)
